The Albany Academies e-newsletter Week of February 15
Enjoying winter's majesty
Our Lower School girls had the opportunity to enjoy the recent snowfall during recess today as they soared down hills on their sleds and created snow sculptures. The girls had a blast running and playing in their winter wonderland!
Hallways buzzing with excitement
The hallways of the Academies have been buzzing with increased activity and visitors over the past two days as Visiting Week continues on the AAG & AA campuses.
85 students have been scheduled to visit AAG & AA -- a record high for four days -- and will have the opportunity to visit classes, meet our faculty, tour our campuses and make new friends at the Academies! Thank you to the many parents who have volunteered to join us this week and greet prospective families. It exemplifies the sense of community here at the Academies and the strong partnership between parents and our school.

Dr. North takes part in leadership panel
|

|
Head of School Dr. Douglas North served as a guest panelist as part of the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce Leadership Institute -- a professional development program offering interactive learning from the industry's most accomplished executives -- on February 12.
The panel -- titled "Human Resources and Organizational Development" -- included a discussion about the challenges of attracting and retaining talent, retooling skills to meet the needs of a totally different world in business and education, teaching "hospitality" to all levels of employees, and identifying where our leadership will come from in the future.
This was a great opportunity for the class of 25 talented professionals to meet Dr. North and learn more about The Albany Academies. | Pictured (left to right) are Brad Shear, Executive Director of the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society; Nina Tyzik, Regional Market Executive for HSBC Bank; Angelo Mazzone, President of Mazzone Management Group; Steven Boyle, President & CEO of St. Peter's Hospital; Kathy Pelham, CEO of United Way of the Greater Capital Region; & Head of School Dr. Douglas North.

Academy student excels at science symposium
|

|
Alydaar Rangwala (Form V) earned a second place medal at the Upstate New York Junior Science and Humanities Symposium on February 6 at Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake High School for his presentation on his independent research project in Biomedical Sciences.
The title of his research is UVA1 Skin Irradiation Modulates the Migration of Dendritic Cells: A Novel Mechanism for the Potential Beneficial Effects of Phototherapy on Systemic Disease.
| Alydaar's interest and work on this project came out of his independent research project on Langerhans Cell Histocytosis, a disease that is rare but can have a high mortality rate when it occurs in very young children. Alydaar connected with Dr. Chris Macomber '01 -- who was working with UVA1 phototherapy -- and with his mentor, Dr. Rice, to develop his research project looking into the treatment of Langerhans cells with UVA1 phototherapy.
During the symposium, Alydaar -- one of 40 students presenting their papers -- gave a 12-minute presentation on his research and answered questions from judges. He will next present at the New York State Science Fair, which will be held at the University at Albany in March.
