Albany Academy for Girls & The Albany Academy are proud to extend warm congratulations to the members of the Class of 2010 as they prepare to head off to some of the finest colleges and universities in the world.
On behalf of Academy faculty, counselors and administration, congratulations once again to all of our seniors who have worked so hard, and best of luck to them as they continue to pursue their next exciting opportunity.
We would also like to recognize the efforts of our dedicated College Counselors Jak Bestle & Lauren Carter (pictured at left) for their assistance in helping our young men and women select the best college choice for them. | VIEW THE CLASS OF 2010 FINAL MATRICULATION LIST.
Renowned psychologist to address AAG Class of 2010
|

|
The Albany Academy for Girls Class of 2010 is privileged to have Dr. Ellen Cole (pictured at left) serve as its commencement speaker on Monday, June 14 under the tent at AAG beginning at 10 a.m. Dr. Cole is the wife of Head of School Dr. Douglas North.
She is a psychologist who has taught at Alaska Pacific University for the past 15 years, and just this year was elected Professor Emerita by her peers. She has been a fellow of the American Psychological Association since 1994, and is the current president of the APA's Division 35, the Society for the Psychology of Women.
Dr. Cole spent 12 years as the co-editor of Women and Therapy and the Haworth Press book program, Innovations in Feminist Studies. | The award that Dr. Cole treasures the most, however, is the "Contribution to Students" award that she received from the students at APU last year. We look forward to Dr. Cole's inspirational words to these young women on June 14. All parents are welcome to attend.
Decorated serviceman to speak to AA Class of 2010
The Albany Academy Class of 2010 will welcome Captain Jeffrey L. Quinn as its commencement speaker on Tuesday, June 15 on the AA Football Field beginning at 10 a.m.
Captain Quinn is a Federal Coordinator for the National Disaster Medical System as well as a member of the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard. Currently, Captain Quinn serves as the Commander of the Aircraft Maintenance Operations Flight.
In 1993, then Sergeant Quinn was assigned to Operation Restore Hope in Mogadishu, Somalia and initially worked for the United Nations. He was then reassigned to Task Force Ranger's Combat Search and Rescue Team on the helicopter "Super 68" where his experiences were documented in the movie Blackhawk Down.
Captain Quinn's awards and honors include a Bronze Star with Valor Device, Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Air Force Commendation Medals, two Army Commendation Medals and the United Nations Medal. We look forward to Captain Quinn addressing our senior boys on June 15. All parents are welcome to attend.
Seniors continue to gain real-world job skills
Pictured (left to right) are Buddy White (Form VI) working in the lab with his mentor Andrea Mannarino at The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering; Chloe Mahoney '10 & Megan Lewis '10 at the Times Union; and Ankur Patel (Form VI) working in the lab at The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.
Our seniors are wrapping up their May Project experiences at companies and organizations throughout the Capital Region. This week, we decided to focus on four of our seniors conducting work at The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and the Times Union, respectively. Brendan Callanan (Form VI) was on assignment to conduct the following write-ups.
THE COLLEGE OF NANOSCALE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING
Buddy White (Form VI) has had a fulfilling experiencing working alongside a graduate student at The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. Buddy plans to major in biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and his experience in dealing with manipulating stem cells has given him a good introduction into the field. Because little is known about the reasons stem cells evolve into other types of cells, top researchers -- such as those working at The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering -- are working hard to uncover their secrets.
Specifically, Buddy has been working on a process called electrospinning, which involves using electricity to spin microscopic nanofibers from drops of solution. Eventually, the fibers will be used to grow cells on, possibly unlocking the secret of stem cells. Buddy has thoroughly enjoyed his experience, and it has reaffirmed his desire to pursue biotechnology in college.
Ankur Patel (Form VI) is also working in a lab at The College of Nanoscale Science for his May Project placement. He will be attending Harvard University in the fall.
TIMES UNION
Megan Lewis '10 & Chloe Mahoney '10 have spent the month of May working at the Times Union for their May Projects. During Megan’s first week, she worked mainly with the local blogs of timesunion.com.
She was responsible for generating greater interest in the blogs, and was able to attend a few meetings and take an extensive tour of the newspaper and its inner-workings. Since that time, she has worked in the newsroom at the News and Information Services Desk where she has written page-toppers for upcoming newspapers.
Megan was also fortunate enough to get the opportunity to see the advertising side of the newspaper and shadow an advertising specialist. She was able to experience the art and revision process of ads, as well as the business side of advertising. She went on off-site meetings with clients concerning their advertisements and future business with the Times Union. For the remainder of her time, she will be back working in the newsroom.
Chloe began her internship during the third week of May due to her AP schedule. She began in the newsroom at the news and information services desk, and was able to observe meetings with the editorial staff. Chloe was fortunate enough to work alongside the advertising layout editor who was in the process of creating the front page of the "Scene" section of the Times Union. Chloe wrote page-toppers and graduation announcements as well as many briefs on local events. For the remainder of her May project, she will continue to work in the newsroom and shadow certain individuals of the news staff.
Please plan to join us on Wednesday, June 9 for the May Projects Fair in the Silipigno Athletic Facility where students will display their work and discuss their experiences.
