Elon Johnson

Elon Johnson '94 works in a place so large she might drive 15 minutes or more to get to a meeting. She passes Italian city streets, nightclubs, polished homes, a rundown trailer park, a yacht, and the White House.

“It’s almost to scale,” she said, of the Oval Office. “You’re not allowed to make it exact.”

It was this setting, the 330-acre Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, that hooked Johnson seven years ago when she interviewed for an executive position. An Emmy-nominated producer who had built critically-acclaimed shows for BET, Anderson Cooper, NBC and MTV, she was not eager to leave New York City.

Her journey from 10th-grade AAG culture club founder to Aspen Global Leadership Network fellow wasn't what she expected, but it's exactly what she was meant to do. Discover how a few transformative teachers and a commitment to representation shaped a career bringing diverse voices to screens everywhere.

Inside the Wind Turbine Project: Innovation by Leo L. ’30

When most students reached for cardboard, Leo '30 fired up CAD software and a 3D printer.

His wind turbine project became an engineering deep dive, researching lift and drag, experimenting with carbon fiber and PLA, and testing blade after blade to find the perfect design. On competition day, his team's brand-new blades broke under pressure. What happened next? A quick pivot, a backup design, and a first-place finish by just 100 milliwatts. Discover how one Middle School student's refusal to give up turned a classroom assignment into real engineering thinking.

Anchored in History: Joe Fitzgerald ’74 and the Port of Albany

Joe Fitzgerald ’74 has brought the dynamic history of the Port of Albany to life in a newly updated article, now featured in the New York Almanack. Originally drafted during his graduate work at the University of Memphis, Fitzgerald’s piece is already making an impact: the Port has selected it to help shape its 2032 Centennial Celebration.

In uncovering the Port’s story, Fitzgerald also shines a spotlight on the remarkable influence of our alumni, including U.S. Representative Peter Ten Eyck, whose leadership was instrumental in the Port’s creation and early governance. With the Centennial on the horizon, Fitzgerald invites faculty and students to dive into this living history, offering exciting opportunities for research, engagement, and future internships.
