Composting in Action: Vermiluv Shares Sustainability Success with Students

Chef Adam from FLIK, Cody Futia from Vermiluv, and Mr. McNally pose for a photo at the Upper School Caird Chapel.

Cody Futia from Vermiluv visited Albany Academy’s Upper School on May 6, 2025 to speak with students about the power of composting and the exciting impact it’s already having on our campus. Vermiluv, a local leader in sustainable waste solutions, has been partnering with our dining service, FLIK, to implement a composting program. This program has been in full-swing at the Lower School Middle School, where students in grades Pre-K through Grade 8 can actively participate in helping to sort their food scraps.

Since launching the initiative, the Albany Academy campus has diverted more than 10,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. That includes kitchen scraps, leftover food, and even compostable items like napkins. Instead of contributing to the landfill, that waste is now being transformed into compost used to nourish local soils.

Futia also shared plans to expand the program to the Upper School next year, empowering even more members of the Academy community to take part in these sustainable efforts.

By actively engaging students in real-world environmental solutions, programs like this empower and involve students directly in sustainability practices to make a lasting impact.
