House Spirit: A Proud Tradition for Academy Boys

Boys pull on a rope while doing a tug of war activity.

Every year at Albany Academy, friendly rivalry and school spirit come alive through the House System—a cornerstone of community, leadership, and fun since its introduction in 2005. What began as part of the Upper School’s Leadership Development program has grown into a cherished, school-wide tradition that brings together Albany Academy boys from Pre-K through Grade 12.

The four houses of Albany Academy, Olcott, Gates, Henry, and Beck, each function as close-knit communities within the school, led by two prefects elected annually from eligible juniors. These prefects manage their House’s participation in school-wide events and House-specific projects that span academics, athletics, and community service. Every boy is assigned to a House when he first joins Albany Academy, creating an immediate sense of belonging and connection.

The House Competition involves all students, with opportunities to earn points throughout the year by participating in academic challenges, athletic competitions, community service events, House responsibilities, and regular bi-weekly House meetings where members plan and coordinate activities.

At the end of the school year, the House with the highest total points is awarded the Meislahn Cup, named in honor of former

Headmaster Harry P. Meislahn (1943–1971). This prestigious award recognizes excellence in academics, leadership, service, and teamwork. More than just a competition, the House System fosters unity, encourages leadership development at every grade level, and promotes a lasting commitment to service and collaboration among students—embodying the true spirit of the Albany Academy community.
