Alumni Association Update

Mark Spiers 'pp, P'32 speaking at the 2025 senior BBQ.

Dear Albany Academy Alumni and Community,

My name is Mark Spiers, Class of 1999, and I am honored to introduce myself as the new President of The Albany Academy Alumni Association. My years at the Academy were truly formative—shaping not only my academic journey but also the values and character that have guided me throughout my life. The experiences I had, the teachers and coaches who challenged and supported me, and the friendships I made laid the foundation for me to make the most of the opportunities that followed.

As we reflect on our school’s rich legacy, it’s remarkable to consider how The Albany Academy has evolved over its 200+ year history. The Academy has grown and adapted, while always remaining committed to its mission of academic excellence and character development. Last year marked a historic milestone as the Upper and Lower Schools became fully co-educational—an important step that reflects the Academy’s continued dedication to meeting the needs of today’s students while preparing them for the world ahead. Though the structure of the school has changed, the core mission—developing thoughtful, well-rounded young leaders—endures just as strongly today as it did in 1813.

In the months ahead, I look forward to collaborating with our Alumnae Council and connecting with many of you, building on the important work already being done to:

    •    Strengthen the ties among our alumni across classes and generations
    •    Support current students through mentorship, engagement, and resources
    •    Celebrate our shared legacy while helping shape a bright future for the Academy

Our alumni community is one of The Albany Academy’s greatest strengths. Whether you’re near or far, recently graduated or decades out, I invite you to stay connected, get involved, and help us build a vibrant, engaged alumni network that reflects the pride we all share in this incredible institution. One great opportunity to reconnect is at Homecoming on Saturday, October 11—I hope to see many of you there as we come together to celebrate our shared history and future.

Before closing, I would like to recognize my predecessor, CDR Joseph Fitzgerald '74 for his extraordinary service and dedication to both the Alumni Association and The Albany Academy. Joe’s leadership and unwavering commitment to the school have left an indelible mark on this community.

Thank you for your continued support—I look forward to serving and growing with you in the year ahead.

Kind regards,

Mark Spiers ’99 P’32
President, The Albany Academy Alumni Association
