An Emmy Comes Home: Thomas Flynn ’65 Honors His Roots

Thomas Flynn '65 speaks at Reunion 2025, revealing an Emmy he gifted to Albany Academy.

On May 16, 2025, during the Welcome Reception at Reunion Weekend, Thomas Flynn ’65 offered the school an unforgettable and deeply meaningful gift—one of his eleven Emmy Awards.

A celebrated writer and producer, Tom spent more than 30 years at CBS News, shaping how the world understood major events—from the fall of the Berlin Wall to the release of Nelson Mandela, the funeral of Princess Diana, and the tragedy of 9/11. But long before his name appeared in Emmy credits, Tom’s story began at Albany Academy, where his curiosity was sparked and his voice began to take shape.

During the reception, Tom was honored as the 2025 Distinguished Alumnus. In his remarks, he credited the Academy—and especially beloved English teacher Frank Nash—with instilling in him the discipline, confidence, and clarity of thought that defined his exceptional career. His decision to gift an Emmy to the school stands as a powerful expression of gratitude and a lasting tribute to the role of transformative teaching.

Throughout his career, Tom remained driven by a deep sense of purpose and integrity—values instilled in him during his time at the Academy. His Emmy serves as an enduring symbol of what’s possible when students are supported, challenged, and inspired to follow their own path.

Today, Tom continues to write, paint, and reflect—splitting time between New York and Cape Cod with his wife Nancy, daughter Katie, and grandson Conrad. His story reminds us that excellence is nurtured through connection, and that the traditions we honor today can shape the leaders—and storytellers—of tomorrow.

Thank you, Tom Flynn ’65, for bringing your Emmy home to Albany Academy.
